Sudan as a nation gained independence in 1956, and shortly after independence civil war broke out between the predominantly Muslim North, and the predominantly Christian South. This continued on and off until 2005 when a peace treaty was signed between the North and South. At the end of the peace treaty a referendum was held resulting in the South gaining independence in July 2011. Therefore the new country – the Republic of South Sudan – was born. Since then, the South has suffered several attacks from the North in the border regions, in particular over the oil fields in these areas. More recently there has been political upheaval because of disagreements between the national leadership. This situation, though not so volatile at the moment, is still ongoing. The European Aid Chief said, “there can be no military solution to this conflict”, and the responsibility for peace rest on the shoulders of the leaders. He said it is a man-made crisis that has caused one of the worst humanitarian disasters of recent years.
We know the answer to this humanitarian disaster, and that answer is JESUS. The Republic of South Sudan, as you may well imagine, has many needs because it is a very young country and the church there is also an infant church. The United Pentecostal Church was registered officially in August 2011, and by the grace of God, there were 3 united pentecostal churches by the end of 2012 in South Sudan (UPCSS), and at this time our missionaries are focusing on training leaders/pastors in the UPCSS.
Together we can see God heal this land and bring peace through focused prayer. Everyday during the month of June, please take a few minutes of your prayer time for focused prayer for our missionaries in South Sudan. Focused prayer is requested for:
- The mercies of God to reign in South Sudan so that the transforming power of the Holy Spirit will bring a true transformation in hearts of the leaders, so they can resolve the political problems.
- The work of God to progress unhindered so that more churches can be established in major populated areas.
- A financial miracle for funds to purchase land and build a Bible school /training facility in Juba, the capital city, and also for funds to purchase a small plot of land to build a missionary residence, given the high cost of rent in South Sudan.
- Our current pastors and leaders that the Lord will establish them in the faith and help them to propagate the Gospel throughout their nation and raise up strong churches.
We are trusting God for great things in the new country of the Republic of South Sudan, and its neighboring nations.
